Dhekelia Sovereign Base Area: the Leicester walkover survey
Dhekelia
A walkover survey by University of Leicester Archaeological Services at Dhekelia to relocate about sixty sites recorded in the early 1960s; quarries, tombs and five historic buildings were found.
The project
University of Leicester Archaeological Services carried out a walkover survey of the Dhekelia garrison and Kingsfield airstrip under the direction of M. Beamish, funded by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation Overseas Stewardship Project1. It aimed to relocate about sixty archaeological locations recorded in the early 1960s, before the garrison and airstrip were built1,2. The locations found included quarries and tombs of uncertain date and five historic buildings, and the reports give the number relocated as between 40 and 511,2. The reports state that some earlier records were unreliable and that some locations had been lost to development2. The fieldwork was reported in March 20241,2.
