White Slip Tankard
Pottery tankard in White Slip II ware; hand-made; ovoid globular body with tall and wide neck and flaring, flattened rim; ring base (chipped); strap handle from shoulder to rim; thumb grip with bifurcating tip above handle; grey fabric with small white and red inclusions; grainy white slip with matt brown paint; upper body decorated with panels filled with horizontal strokes, rosettes and verticals and horizontal rows of plain lozenges framed by double vertical rows of cross-hatched lozenges within parallel lines; below, horizontal band with complex ladder patter from which vertical bands of ladders and plain and cross-hatched lozenges descend to the base; base with plain bands criss-crossing over the centre; bands or parallel and wavy lines on rim; thumb grip with series of short horizontal strokes; handle with zig-zag decoration composed of parallel lines.
