Z. Sztetyłło

fl. 1963–2010 · Poland

Member of the Polish Mission at Nea Paphos who published its stamped amphora handles in three volumes (1976, 1991, 2010) and whose photograph archive illustrates the history of the excavations.

Biography

Z. Sztetyłło, whose forename no source gives, published the stamped amphora handles found by the Polish Mission at Nea Paphos. The Polish excavations at Kato Paphos began in 1965 under Kazimierz Michałowski and by 1984 were directed by Wiktor A. Daszewski2. Sztetyłło's first volume, Nea Paphos I: Les timbres céramiques (1965-1973), appeared in Warsaw in 1976; Maier and Karageorghis cite it as one of the two Polish volumes then published, and print the author's initial as S.2,3. Nea Paphos IV: Pottery Stamps (1975-1989) followed in 1991 and Nea Paphos VI: Pottery Stamps from Nea Paphos (Excavations 1990-2006) in 20104,5. With Daszewski, Sztetyłło wrote an article on the Maloutena region before the building of the Villa of Theseus, in Report of the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus for 1988, pp. 195-2036.

The history of research at Nea Paphos by Ewdoksia Papuci-Władyka and Ł. Miszk illustrates the mission with photographs from "the archive of Z. Sztetyllo". These include a 1963 view of the Maloutena site with I. Michaelidou-Nicolaou, K. Nicolaou and Michałowski, and plates of the House of Dionysos shelter, the House of Aion mosaic and Paphos harbour. Captions place Sztetyłło in 1973 with Daszewski and the statue of Aphrodite found at the Villa of Theseus, and in 1984 with Papuci-Władyka, Daszewski and S. Medeksza before the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates1.
