Vladimir P. Vanchugov

fl. 1999–2001 · Ukraine

Director of the Archaeological Museum of Odessa who, with Vassos Karageorghis, edited the 2001 catalogue that first published the museum's small Cypriote collection.

Biography

Vladimir P. Vanchugov was the director of the Archaeological Museum of Odessa when its Cypriote antiquities were first catalogued. Vassos Karageorghis visited Odessa in the summer of 1999 on behalf of the A.G. Leventis Foundation, and the idea of a catalogue of the museum's most important works dates from that visit. Vanchugov accepted the proposal "with enthusiasm" and undertook the coordination of the texts1. The dates of his directorship are not recorded.

The book, Greek and Cypriote Antiquities in the Archaeological Museum of Odessa, lists Karageorghis and Vanchugov as chief editors and Vanchugov among the text authors1. He wrote the history of the museum, signed "Director of the Archaeological Museum of Odessa, May 2000". It records the foundation of the museum in 1825 and counts "ancient sculptures from Cyprus (T.P. Iuzefovich)" among its most significant donations1. Karageorghis described the Cypriote section, nos. 150 to 175, which is small and without provenance: the pottery and sculpture came from T.P. Iuzefovich, who presented them on 12 September 18751. The Leventis Foundation paid for the catalogue, printed in 1500 copies in Nicosia in September 20011.

The museum history also lists Vanchugov among the researchers who excavated Bronze Age settlements and kurgans1. He was first author of the 1991 monograph on the Late Bronze Age settlement of Voronovka II2.
