Donor of the Cypriot pottery and limestone sculpture in the Archaeological Museum of Odessa, given on 12 September 1875; a Russian consul Yusefovich sold Cypriot antiquities to Count Uvarov.
Biography
The Cypriot collection of the Archaeological Museum of Odessa, pottery and about 22 limestone sculptures, was presented to the museum by T. P. Iuzefovich on 12 September 18751. The catalogue introduction states that none of the Cypriot objects has a recorded provenance and that all the pottery and sculpture came from this gift. It says nothing of where or how he acquired them, or what post he held1.
A "Russian consul Yusefovich" appears in the history of another collection. Count Alexei Uvarov showed the Moscow Archaeological Society his Cypriot antiquities on 27 April 1877, several hundred pieces bought in the 1870s from this man. According to Uvarov's 1880 publication, as summarised in the catalogue of Russian museums, Yusefovich dug tombs near the temple at Golgoi-Agios Photios in 1870, the year Luigi Palma di Cesnola worked there. Uvarov described him as a collector rather than an archaeologist, and no findspots survive2. Neither catalogue identifies him with the Odessa donor, though the date and the material are close.
