The Cypriot collection

A small Cypriot collection with no provenance: pottery and 22 limestone sculptures (catalogue nos 148-175, of which 2 heads singled out) presented by T. P. Iuzefovich on 12 September 1875, plus more fragmentary small sculptures not catalogued. The museum as a whole holds over 170,000 objects. (2001)

History

  1. 9 August 1825
    The City Museum of Antiquities opened in Odessa, after a plan of 1824 by I. A. Stempkovskij to Governor Vorontsov; its core was 347 objects and 50 books given by I. P. Blaramberg, who was the first director.

  2. 12 September 1875
    T. P. Iuzefovich presented the Cypriot pottery and limestone sculpture to the Museum. Karageorghis says they are not related to Odessa or the Black Sea colonies.

  3. 1883
    The Mayor Gregorios Maraslis and the City Council funded the present museum building (architect F. Gonsiorovsij), which first held the Museum of Antiquities and the City Library.

  4. 1983
    The Museum's illustrated Russian catalogue (OAM 1983) published some of the Cypriot objects; the 2001 catalogue gives updated references.

  5. 1999
    Karageorghis visited Odessa on behalf of the A. G. Leventis Foundation (summer 1999), and with Jacqueline Karageorghis described the Cypriot objects.
