V. Delbergue-Cormont

fl. 1859–1875 · France

Paris commissaire-priseur who conducted the Hôtel Drouot sales of Cesnola's Cypriot antiquities in March 1870 and of further Cypriot antiquities in December 1873.

Biography

V. Delbergue-Cormont was the commissaire-priseur at the Paris sale of Luigi Palma di Cesnola's Cypriot antiquities on 25 and 26 March 1870. The catalogue names him as commissaire-priseur and Henri Hoffmann as expert1. His forename is not recorded; the December 1873 catalogue prints only the initial V.2.

His earlier sales were of other things. Catalogues of 1859 and 1861 give his address as 8 rue de Provence, the first for a sale of old-master paintings from the collection of a lady of Strasbourg, the second for coins and porcelain from the collection of the late Marin Lavigne, with a M. Rollin as expert3,4.

The Cesnola sale was held at the Hôtel des Commissaires-Priseurs. The catalogue describes the pieces as coming from excavations made in 1866 by Cesnola, and W. Froehner wrote its preface1,7. Lila Marangou lists the buyers as the Louvre, the museums of Autun, Saint-Germain, Marseille and Orléans, and private collectors including Louis de Clercq7. Cesnola complained of the prices in a letter of 30 April 18707.

On 15 and 16 December 1873 he conducted a second Drouot sale, of Cypriot antiquities described as coming from recent excavations, again with Hoffmann as expert2.
