Tasoula Hadjitofi

fl. 1987–2019 · Cyprus

Honorary Consul of Cyprus in the Netherlands from 1987 who founded Walk of Truth in 2011, the organisation that returned four Apsinthiotissa fresco fragments to Cyprus in 2019.

Biography

Tasoula Hadjitofi was appointed Honorary Consul of Cyprus in the Netherlands in 1987. Olga Rizopoulos's thesis on the frescoes of Panagia Apsinthiotissa says her work against art trafficking began when dealers tried to sell her stolen Cypriot objects, among them two of the Kanakaria mosaics before they reached Peg Goldberg1.

The thesis also says she coordinated "The Munich Case" in 19971. In 2011 she founded Walk of Truth, a non-governmental organisation that receives anonymous tips about stolen artefacts through a network of volunteers1.

In 2014 a courier delivered four fresco fragments to her London hotel room from a Canadian collector who asked to remain anonymous and that the frescoes go to their rightful owner. They were shown at a House of Lords event hosted by Baroness Berridge1. Rizopoulos notes that since 1987 Hadjitofi had been told that religious antiquities belong to the Church of Cyprus, and that she worked under a power of attorney from the relevant bishop1. She corresponded with the Department of Antiquities in 2015 about ownership and the 100-year definition of an antiquity, and in January 2017 wrote to the Foreign Ministry about the failure to repatriate the frescoes1. Walk of Truth delivered the four fragments to the Republic of Cyprus at its embassy in The Hague on 21 January 20191.
