Sylvia Brehme
fl. 2001–2013 · Germany
Curator of the Cypriote collection of the Antikensammlung in Berlin and lead author of the 2001 catalogue Ancient Cypriote Art in Berlin, in which she wrote on Max Ohnefalsch-Richter.
Biography
Sylvia Brehme is the first-named author of Ancient Cypriote Art in Berlin (2001), the catalogue of the Cypriote holdings of the Antikensammlung, the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte and the Münzkabinett, published by the A. G. Leventis Foundation with the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin1. A German edition, Antike Kunst aus Zypern, followed in 20022. Vassos Karageorghis wrote the pottery and terracottas, and Brehme the stone, metal and limestone sculpture of the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte. D. W. Rupp, reviewing the book, calls her biography of Max Ohnefalsch-Richter "informative"5.
Rupp summarises her account of how the collection of over 1,200 Cypriote objects was formed. Objects came to Berlin from 1845 by purchase from Cyprus, through small German collections, by transfer from other German museums and from Ohnefalsch-Richter's excavations, especially at Tamassos. The collection was dispersed after the Second World War and reassembled after 19925. Hermary, in 2014, described her as curator of the Cypriote collection6.
