fl. 1930–1934 · United Kingdom
Egyptologist who deciphered and drew the Egyptian scarabs found by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition, for publication in its second volume.
Biography
Professor Percy Newberry read the Egyptian scarabs that the Swedish Cyprus Expedition dug up between 1927 and 1931. The Preface to the first volume of the expedition's publication states that he and Max Pieper deciphered and described the scarabs found at the excavations, and that Newberry also made drawings of a great number of them. Volume I contains no scarab descriptions; the results were to appear in volume II1.
His work was written into the agreement on dividing the finds. The memorandum of 27 October 1930 on the allocation of the expedition's finds provided that scarabs allotted to the Cyprus Museum might be temporarily sent to Professor Newberry for decipherment2. He also appears in the list of subscribers to volume I, as "Igtham, England"1. His birth and death dates are not recorded.
