Mr. Stickney
fl. 1883–1884 · United States
American lawyer, active 1883–1884. Worked with Joseph H. Choate.
Life and work
- 31 October 1883Named with Joseph H. Choate as counsel for the defendant, L. P. Di Cesnola, in Feuardent's libel suit before Judge Shipman in the US Circuit Court (trial began 31 October 1883). The plaintiff's side: Messrs. Oudin and Oakley, attorneys, and Mr. F. C. Bangs, counsel.
- October–December 1883On the third day of the trial, during the cross-examination of Henry G. Hutchins, showed him statue no. 157 (Venus to Cesnola, Elpis or Hope to Feuardent) and asked 'Is it not the identical figure in controversy, instead of a representation?'; Hutchins answered that it looked different from the one in Fourteenth Street (smoother, with a mirror, cleaner, smaller).
- October–December 1883Questioned the restorer Gehlen (examined for the plaintiff by Bangs) about the Hercules in the Central Park museum: Gehlen said the statue 'looks taller, and the feet are not the ones originally belonging there'; Stickney interjected 'As you think', Gehlen answered 'No; as I know'.
- December 1883 – January 1884The January 1884 report says Alley 'was subjected to a searching cross-examination by the lawyers of the defendant'; it does not say which of them. Savage's cross-examination, in which Cesnola's lawyers had a letter of his read, is likewise not attributed to a named counsel.
