Henryk Meyza

fl. 1993–2020 · Poland

Polish archaeologist and ceramicist of the Polish Mission at Nea Paphos, author of the Cypriot Red Slip Ware volume in the Nea Paphos series and editor of a 2020 book on building decoration.

Biography

Henryk Meyza is the ceramic specialist who wrote the Nea Paphos volume on Cypriot Red Slip Ware, a Late Roman fine ware, published in 20072. A 1993 photograph of the Polish Mission's pottery storeroom at Nea Paphos shows him working with Ewdoksia Papuci-Władyka and Jolanta Młynarczyk1. After a workshop at Nieborów in December 1993 he and Młynarczyk co-edited Hellenistic and Roman Pottery in the Eastern Mediterranean (1995)1. In 2004 he published the amphora stamps from the Kourion acropolis excavations3.

Papuci-Władyka writes that she worked in the Polish Mission first under W. A. Daszewski, until 2007, "and then, with H. Meyza"1. His season reports for the Mission appeared in Polish Archaeology in the Mediterranean for 2008, 2009, 2010-2011, 2012-2013 and 2014/20161. With D. Bagińska he published an overview of the Roman amphorae from the Mission's excavations at Maloutena, a quarter where urgent work linked to the construction of shelters had left much pottery unstudied; they note two destruction events, a Hadrianic-period earthquake horizon and the one that destroyed Kourion, which preserved groups in place4.

He also co-wrote the 2015 catalogue Nea Paphos 1965-2015 with Iwona Zych, for an exhibition at the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia, and in 2020 edited Decoration of Hellenistic and Roman Buildings in Cyprus, which came out of a conference held on 10 and 11 March 20171,5. His date of birth and training are not recorded.
