H. Weeren
fl. 1893–1899 · Germany
Professor of metallurgy, Technical High School, Berlin/Charlottenburg, active 1893–1899. Worked with Max Ohnefalsch-Richter.
Life and work
- 1893Ohnefalsch-Richter thanks Weeren, 'Director of the metallurgical laboratory in the Technical High School', for analyses on which he bases a division of the Graeco-Phoenician copper-bronze period into a copper and a bronze period.
- 1893Ohnefalsch-Richter reports being informed by 'Herr Professor Weeren, of the Technical High School in Berlin' that the ancient glass industry arose alongside copper smelting (used for his argument that Cypriot glass was locally made).
- 1894Named by Ohnefalsch-Richter (letter of 1894) among the contributors, 'H. Weeren (Berlin)', to the planned work Tamassos und Idalion (publisher Giesecke and Devrient, announced for 1895); Masson & Hermary's note glosses his part as chemical analyses. The work was not published.
- 1895In a 1895 letter offering cylinder seals for sale, Ohnefalsch-Richter says he asked 'Professor Weeren', who found that blue 'metallised' cylinders of this kind are not stone but an artificial copper composition obtained when smelting copper from ore.
- 1899The Cyprus Museum catalogue credits Weeren with analyses: an iron-oxide implement from a Bronze Age necropolis (Phoenikais, per O-R) 'Prof. Weeren, Techn. Hochschule, Charlottenburg', and the black artificial paste of Cypriote cylinders 'Dr. Weeren, Technol. Hochschule, Charlottenburg'.
