Glenn Edward Markoe

1951–2012

American art historian (1951-2012) whose 1985 catalogue of Phoenician bronze and silver bowls is the standard corpus for the decorated bowls found in Cyprus.

Biography

Glenn Markoe's 1985 catalogue Phoenician Bronze and Silver Bowls from Cyprus and the Mediterranean is the corpus cited for the decorated metal bowls from Idalion, Amathus and the Cesnola Collection. He was born in New York City in 1951 and died in Kenwood, Ohio, in 20129.

The book, published by the University of California Press, lists bowls from Greece, Crete, Cyprus, Rhodes, Sicily, Italy, Anatolia, Iran and Israel7. Its Cyprus entries include Cy1 and Cy2, two bowls with Phoenician inscriptions from the hoard found at Ambelliri, Idalion, in 18498. Vassos Karageorghis wrote in 1999 that Markoe had published over seventy surviving examples2.

Markoe dated the silver bowls to the first quarter of the seventh century BC, earlier than Einar Nilson Gjerstad did. Karageorghis preferred Markoe's date2. Hermary gave the same split for Cesnola Collection bowl 74.51.4557, which Markoe placed in the early seventh century and Gjerstad in the early sixth3. Franklin (2016) used his division of the symposium bowls into phases4.
