The Cypriot collection

Held the Cypriot antiquities bought from Rupert Gunnis in 1933 (mainly pottery Early Cypriot to Roman, lamps, terracottas); Symons says the Wellcome Cypriot material was dispersed in 1981, mostly to Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery (1981)

Symons 1987

History

  1. 30 August 1933
Bought a collection of Cypriot antiquities from Rupert Gunnis. Symons gives the date and says no documents survive. Hilton, Director of Antiquities, named the buyer as "Mr. Starkie", the Wellcome Museum Director, and listed the Wellcome sale in a confidential report of 18 March 1936 which also questions how Gunnis formed and exported his collection (an allegation, attributed to Hilton).

  2. 1981
Per Symons, the Wellcome Cypriot material, with Gunnis's collection, was dispersed, mostly to Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery with small groups elsewhere; over 200 pieces can be firmly identified as Gunnis's. Russell 1986 is the cited study of the Wellcome Museum's dispersal of non-medical material 1936-1983 (not read).
