Views of Cyprus in an album of travel photographs, c.1880

4 items: 4 photographs.

Five photographs of Cyprus are mounted on two pages (40 and 41) of an album of travel photographs at the Wellcome Collection (575411i). The album holds sixty-two prints on fifty-nine leaves; its own lettering summarises the contents as "America, Canada, Cyprus &c.", and its cover carries interlocking metal initials that the catalogue reads, with a query, as "BVC". Neither the compiler nor the photographers are recorded, and Wellcome dates the album to about 1880.

The Cyprus prints are general views captioned in the album: a two-part panorama of Limassol ("General view of Limasol"), the ruins of the palace at Famagusta ("Ducal palace at Famagousta"), the harbour of Kyrenia ("General view of Kyrinia") and the waterfront at Scala near Larnaca ("Scala Mole"). They show the same coastal towns that John Thomson photographed in 1878 and can be set beside his views. Four of the five have been digitised; the first section of the Limassol panorama has not, and so is not shown here.

Wellcome publishes the prints under the Public Domain Mark. Our English titles and captions describe what each photograph shows; the album's own captions are given beside them.
