Life and work
- 1880Seconded by the French government to Cyprus as a reforestation specialist 'proven in Algeria' (Buchholz's wording, German).

- 1881Became chief of Max Ohnefalsch-Richter, who was made 'Superintendent of Works for Replanting' and, in his wife's phrase, 'Assistant' to Madon.
- 1881–1882On Ohnefalsch-Richter's account, Madon and High Commissioner Sir Robert Biddulph proposed joining the two plantations (north and south of Salamis) by a belt across the ruins of Salamis; O.-R. had to carry it out on pain of dismissal, with instructions to report and suspend work if antiquities were met.

- 1881–1882While digging water-holes for the plantations O.-R. located the Zeus temenos at Salamis (11 Feb 1882), which Newton later arranged for him to excavate for the British Museum after he left the Forest Department. Madon is only the chief under whom this happened.
