Charles Ede Ltd
London, United Kingdom · founded 25 June 1971
London ancient-art dealer incorporated in 1971 by Charles Ede, which has issued numbered Cypriot Pottery catalogues since 1976 and still lists Cypriot pieces with Cesnola and Pitt Rivers provenance.
About
Charles Ede Ltd grew out of Folio Fine Art, a mail-order business of the 1960s, and became a London ancient-art dealer in 1971 when Charles Ede left the Folio Society to set up on his own6,7. The company was incorporated on 25 June 197113. Its catalogues ran from number 83 in 1971 to 98 in 19741. From 1976 it also issued catalogues of Cypriot pottery, recorded at issue IX (1983), XI (1989), XII (1991) and XVI (2000), with a further issue in 200312.
Charis Tyndall joined the gallery in 2013 and became a director in 2017, and James Richards has been a partner since 202413,18. Martin Clist was appointed a director in 201413. The original company was dissolved in May 2024, and a second one, registered in 2013 as Aglaia Antiquities Limited, now carries the name Charles Ede Limited13,14. The firm is a member of the Antiquities Dealers' Association, the British Antique Dealers' Association and the International Association of Dealers in Ancient Art, and BADA lists its appearances at TEFAF Maastricht and New York and at Frieze Masters6. In 2024 the gallery added British and European paintings and works on paper to its ancient sculpture, and a collections manager appointed in 2025 is digitising the historical catalogues18.
Its Cypriot stock is mostly small pottery. The Christmas 2025 catalogue of 2025 lists five pieces, among them a Black-on-Red juglet at GBP 900, a Bichrome amphora at GBP 1,800 and a Base Ring poppy flask at GBP 600, with provenance lines that cite earlier Ede catalogues from 1972 to 198315. A White Painted jug of 17.9 cm bears the ink inscription "From Cesnola Coll / Lot 650" and is traced to the Pitt Rivers sale at Sotheby's on 17 May 1976, lot 33515. General Catalogue 199 (October 2019) offered a limestone male head, 14.1 cm, ex Cesnola16. Ede also handled a Cypro-Classical limestone figurine of a hound eating a rabbit from the Pitt Rivers group, which the British Museum acquired in 201221.
The Cypriot collection
A dealer, not a holder: between Nov 1969 and June 1975 seventeen Prehistoric Bronze Age vessels appeared in its general catalogues and 52 more EC-MC pieces in Cypriot-only catalogues of 1976-80; also issued a numbered Cypriot Pottery series (IX 1983, XI 1989, XII 1991, XIII 1993, XVI 2000, a 2003 issue) and lists Cypriot White Painted ware in its online antiquities gallery; the firm still offers Cypriot pieces (five in its Christmas 2025 catalogue, one in General Catalogue 199, 2019) and handled Cesnola and Pitt Rivers pieces, one of them acquired by the British Museum in 2012 (2025)
