Alexander Ancient Art

Alexander Ancient Art is a dealership in Voorschoten, in the Netherlands, run by the Egyptologist Alexander Biesbroek. According to the firm, he studied Egyptology at Utrecht and Leiden, has collected ancient art since 1972, began dealing in 1986 and established the company in 1991; until 2003 he also held a part-time post at Utrecht University¹. The firm gives its memberships as IADAA, KVHOK (the Royal Association of Fine Art Dealers in the Netherlands), CINOA and ADCAEA¹. It names fairs including OPUS Ancient Arts and Parcours des Mondes in Paris, BAAF and BRUNEAF in Brussels, and Olympia in London². Its website offers catalogue PDFs for years between 2013 and 2025 and receives visitors by appointment^4,13. North Data records its corporate purpose as buying and selling art objects of ancient cultures, selling books and giving courses on ancient languages and cultures¹⁴.

Cyprus is a small section of the firm's online stock. In 2026 it listed seven Cypriot pieces priced from EUR 950 to 7,500³. Four (C1278 to C1281) are Cypro-Geometric or Cypro-Archaic Bichrome vessels. Their printed provenance is the Cyprus Museum of Dr Takey Crist in Jacksonville, North Carolina, then Charles Ede Ltd, London^6,7,8,9. A White Painted barrel jar (C0749) is given the provenance of the Swiss private collection of A. Branca, Ascona, acquired between 1960 and 1980¹². A White Slip II milk bowl (C0602) is traced to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1896 and the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford in 1968¹¹.

A terracotta head of a goddess (C1357) is dated by the firm to the 6th-5th century BC, with a later dating by McCarran in 1947 noted. Its printed chain runs from the French painter Louis Collin to Senator W. A. Clark, the Corcoran Gallery of Art (1926-2014), the American University Museum (2014-2021) and then Sands of Time Gallery, Washington¹⁰.
