About

Royal-Athena Galleries was the New York dealership of Jerome M. Eisenberg (1930-2022), which has closed its premises; remaining stock is handled through Hixenbaugh Ancient Art5,7. According to the gallery's own site it dealt in ancient coins from 1942 and in ancient art from 19545. The Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation describes Eisenberg as founding and directing the galleries in New York and London from 1942 to 2020, and as editor of the journal Minerva from 1990 to 20096,7.

The firm published a series of catalogues titled Art of the Ancient World, and a further catalogue, 1,000 Years of Ancient Greek Vases II, in 20082.

Its Cypriot pieces show up in the provenance lines of later sales. A Cypro-Archaic I bichrome amphora sold at Christie's in 2023 (sale 21709, lot 51) passed through Sotheby's London in 1987, then Royal-Athena Galleries, then a La Jolla private collection from 1991, and was with Charles Ede in 20143. A 6th-century BC Cypriot target vase carrying a Royal Athena label was sold at Westport Auction in 20244.
