The project
In 1862 Edmond Duthoit, accompanied by M. Grasset, searched the stones and ruins of Soli for a reported Cypriot inscription1,2. He found a well-preserved inscription of two lines in Cypriot characters and had the large stone removed1. The Madi objected, and Duthoit invoked his firman1,2. Foucart-Borville identifies the inscription as now in the Louvre, inventory AM 18611. His account appears in his Cypriot correspondence, edited by Foucart-Borville1, and the 1862 letters reporting the removal in Bonato's edition of the Vogüé mission correspondence2. The 2012 catalogue City of Gold records the findspot as Chrysochou3.
