Salamis: George Jeffery's clearances of the Early Christian buildings
1926 · Salamis
Also known as Jeffery at the Basilica of St Epiphanios
George Jeffery's 1926 partial excavation of the nave of the Basilica of St Epiphanios at Salamis, within his limited digging there in the 1920s and 1930s.
The project
In 1926 George Jeffery, Curator of Ancient Monuments under the Government of Cyprus, partly excavated the nave of the Basilica of St Epiphanios at Salamis1.
Foulias reports that the basilica site has been occupied by Turkish troops since the Turkish invasion of 19741.
Kiely describes Jeffery's excavations at Salamis more broadly as limited and spread across the 1920s and 1930s2. Jeffery's 1928 report on the Basilica of Constantia, in the Antiquaries Journal, is the publication Foulias cites for the 1926 excavation.
