The project
On 8 and 9 May 1910 Max Ohnefalsch-Richter and Kurt Koritzky made a rapid visit to Rantidi1. The party turned over stone fragments from large buildings and reported at least a dozen fragments bearing characters of the Cypriot-Greek syllabary; sudden rain and nearby police allowed only a brief surface investigation, without photographs or squeezes1. Masson reports that Koritzky alone signed an application for an excavation permit on 10 May, and that permission went instead to Robert Zahn for a separate excavation1. Ohnefalsch-Richter returned in August, on 22 or 23 August according to The Times or on 27 August according to Globus, and photographed and took squeezes of two inscriptions lying on the surface1,2. Buchholz writes that he undertook secret excavations at Rantidi, where Masson describes a surface investigation1,2.
