Enkomi: the South Kensington Museum tomb excavations
1882 · Enkomi
Also known as South Kensington Museum excavations at Enkomi
George Gordon Hake's excavation of 45 tombs at Enkomi in 1882 for the South Kensington Museum, recorded in the Cyprus Museum catalogue.
The project
In 1882 George Gordon Hake excavated 45 tombs at Enkomi, near the monastery of Ag. Barnábas, for the South Kensington Museum, now the Victoria and Albert Museum1. The Catalogue of the Cyprus Museum lists the work under 1882 and Hake's name. Karageorghis groups the Hake campaign with earlier excavations that, he says, were never properly published and added little to knowledge of the archaeology of Salamis2.
