The project
At Dhenia-Kafkalla in 1961 farmers searching for tombs dug a pit that yielded Red-on-White pottery and andesite mortars and pestles; Karageorghis took the pottery to be Neolithic IB, 5250–4950 BCE, a period previously represented at Troulli1,2. In 1965 the Archaeological Exploration Section of the Antiquities Service carried out rescue operations in half-looted tombs there and recovered vessels, among them a Red-Polished bowl with bucrania and a White Painted III jug3. In 1966 sherds collected from looted tombs in the prehistoric cemetery were put together into two askoi and two jugs4. In 1976 two half-looted tombs were reported: Tomb 4 at Kafkalla, with Plain White Wheelmade jugs, fruit-stands and other local Late Cypriot II vessels, and Tomb 3a at Mali, with a gold diadem decorated with repoussé shields, a Mycenaean IIIB pilgrim flask, Late Cypriot II vessels, ivory box fragments and a bronze knife5. The finds carry Cyprus Museum inventory numbers, and the 1976 report states that the Museum acquired the material from those tombs3,5.
