Dhenia-Kafkalla: the Griffith-Williams excavation, 1953
1953 · Deneia-Kafkalla
The 1953 excavation at the Kafkaila cemetery at Dhenia under Mr. Justice Griffith-Williams: two looted Middle Cypriot tombs and a small intact Early Cypriot II tomb group.
The project
In 1953 Mr. Justice Griffith-Williams, assisted by G. R. H. Wright, excavated at the Kafkaila cemetery at Dhenia for the Department of Antiquities1.
In the north part of the cemetery they excavated two large looted tombs, identified as Middle Cypriot, which yielded large quantities of fragmentary but restorable White Painted pottery. In the south area they excavated a small intact Early Cypriot II tomb group1. Separately, pottery looted from the south area reached the Cyprus Museum through confiscation1.
