Description

Three men work at the edge of a shallow excavated trench in open, dry ground. The man at left, in a light shirt and cap, bends over to strike the ground with a hoe; a seated man in a hat sits at the trench edge at right, and a man in dark clothes crouches among rounded stones in the foreground. Low scrubby vegetation and a flat horizon fill the background, and a small white stake stands beside the trench.

Three men work in a shallow excavation on flat, dry ground. The man on the left bends forward with a hoe-like tool, another in a light shirt and hat sits at the edge of the cut, and a third in a dark cap crouches among rounded stones. A thin wooden stake stands upright beside the stones, and the soil face rises behind them under a pale sky.
