T. Phylaktou
fl. 1976–1979 · Cyprus
Nicosia collector who gave the Cyprus Museum the bronze fragments rebuilt as a helmet in 1976 and whose vases Karageorghis published.
Biography
In 1976 a Nicosia collector named in print as "M. T. Phylaktou" gave the Cyprus Museum a cardboard box of small bronze fragments that he believed belonged to a vase. They were said to come from one tomb in the Athienou area, exact provenance unknown. Museum technicians cleaned and rejoined them into a helmet, inventory 1976/XII-15/3, 48 cm high, with hinged cheek-pieces, a duck-head finial and a repoussé forehead band. Vassos Karageorghis reported it in the Chronique des fouilles for 1976 as a very rare piece1.
The same Chronique publishes two vases from the "Collection T. Phylaktou, Nicosie": a Bichrome II ring-shaped vase with seven modelled birds, and an undecorated Cypro-Classical vase of about 400 BC with an incised syllabic inscription, which Olivier Masson read as "of Philokretes, the bow-maker"1. The inscribed vase is of unknown origin. Dissinger lists a Cypro-Archaic I krater with birds standing on bulls in the collection as well, citing Karageorghis 19793. No forename, dates or account of how he acquired the pieces appear in these publications.
