Ronald Frank Tylecote

1916–1990 · United Kingdom

Metallurgist whose work on furnaces is cited for copper smelting at Late Bronze Age Kition and Enkomi, where he read an excavated vessel as a smelting furnace.

Biography

Ronald Frank Tylecote, a metallurgist, was born in Manchester on 15 June 1916 and died on 17 June 19901.

Two of his publications are cited in writing on Cypriot copper. One, of 1971, is the reference given for "furnace conglomerate" at Kition2. The other, of 1982, is cited for the Enkomi vessel (Dikaios inventory 1640), which he treated as a smelting furnace3. Bernard Knapp, Kassianidou and Donnelly say that Tylecote identified the Enkomi vessel as a furnace, and later authors regard its function as debated4.
