Restorer / conservator
Milorad Medić
fl. 1968–1975 · Yugoslav
Yugoslav mosaic restorer sent by UNESCO who directed conservation of the House of Dionysos pavements at Nea Paphos from 1968 and was still supervising repairs there in 1975.
Biography
Milorad Medić, printed in the reports as Medic, was an expert from Yugoslavia who headed the UNESCO and Department of Antiquities work on the mosaic floors of the House of Dionysos at Nea Paphos. Kyriakos Nicolaou's report for 1968 names "Mr. Milorad Medic, an expert from Yugoslavia, in charge"1, and Vassos Karageorghis records that the 1968 work ran for six months5.
In 1969 he was again in charge, and the Rooms of Narcissus and of the Peacock and part of the Room of the Triumph of Dionysos were restored2. Nicolaou's next report says UNESCO restorers under his supervision, together with Department restorers, lifted the damaged mosaics of the Triclinium and of the Hippolytos and Phaedra room and relaid them on new foundations. Digging beneath the floors produced the deposit of clay seal impressions3,4.
After the villa was bombed in the summer of 1974, the Chronique for 1975 reports its restoration "under the supervision of the UNESCO expert, M. Medic". The Four Seasons mosaic was restored with his help, and he is also named in connection with consolidating the new Poseidon and Amphitrite mosaic in the House of Theseus6. The reports name him for 1968, 1969 and 1975, and nothing is known of his life outside them.
