Laurence Alpe
fl. 2003–2016
French-language scholar of Limassol and the kingdom of Amathus whose 2007 thesis and later chapter treat the city's tombs, and who reviewed the Zintilis collection catalogue in 2004.
Biography
Laurence Alpe, a French-language scholar of Limassol and the kingdom of Amathus, reviewed the printed catalogue of the Zintilis collection in 2004. In 2003 she published with Sabine Fourrier an article on a production of Amathus in the Cahiers du Centre d'Etudes Chypriotes9.
Her review in the Cahiers of Stella M. Lubsen-Admiraal's catalogue of the collection of Thanos N. Zintilis records that it was formed mostly in the 1950s and 1960s, was long kept at the Allard Pierson Museum, and has been at the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens since 2002. She gives its contents as 389 pieces of pottery, 79 of stone, 57 terracotta statuettes, 30 of metal and 159 pieces of jewellery, and faults the printed volume for its lack of photographs1. In the next volume she reviewed several catalogues in the SIMA series and Jacqueline Karageorghis's Kypris, the Aphrodite of Cyprus, remarking that chance finds, looting and acquisitions had too often caused the archaeological context and provenance of such antiquities to be forgotten2.
In 2007 she completed a thesis, "Limassol et ses environs: étude d'un site secondaire au temps des royaumes de Chypre", at the Université de Provence Aix-Marseille I7. The same year she argued, in a paper on the Cypro-Archaic sanctuary of Limassol-Komissariato, that it shows an indigenous cult that took in Phoenician elements, not a purely Phoenician sanctuary5. Her chapter "Limassol in Antiquity: from its Origins to the End of the Roman Period" (pp. 49-95) in a collective history of the city, published by 2016, draws on funerary material from 332 tombs found in rescue excavations in different quarters of Limassol8.
Life and work
- 2003Published with S. Fourrier 'Une production originale d'Amathonte' in Cahiers du Centre d'Etudes Chypriotes 33.
- 2004Reviewed in CCEC 34 S. M. Lubsen-Admiraal's catalogue Ancient Cypriote Art in the T.N. Zintilis Collection (SIMA 20:25, 2003), saying the collection of the businessman and Cypriot consul in the Netherlands (1975-93) was formed mostly in the 1950s-60s, long kept at the Allard Pierson Museum, in Athens at the Museum of Cycladic Art since 2002, first shown in the 1989 'Cyprus and Aphrodite' exhibition. Gives the category counts (pottery 389, stone 79, terracotta statuettes 57, metal 30, jewellery 159) and criticises the printed volume's lack of photographs.
- 2005Reviewed J. Karageorghis, Kypris, the Aphrodite of Cyprus (Leventis Foundation, 2005) and, in the same review section, SIMA XX:26 and XX:21 catalogue volumes, remarking that chance finds, looting and acquisitions had too often made the archaeological context and provenance of such antiquities forgotten.
- 2007Published 'La question du sanctuaire de Limassol-Komissariato' (CCEC 37, Hommage à Annie Caubet), arguing the Cypro-Archaic sanctuary shows an indigenous cult incorporating Phoenician elements rather than a purely Phoenician sanctuary.
- 2016Contributed the chapter 'Limassol in Antiquity: from its Origins to the End of the Roman Period' (pp. 49-95) to a collective history of Limassol; the reviewer says it studies funerary material from 332 tombs found in rescue excavations in different quarters of Limassol.
