The project
In 1970 John C. Overbeck and Stuart Swiny cleared Tomb G in the necropolis at Kafkallia and surveyed the fortified settlement on the plateau1. In Tomb G they set out to measure and draw the tomb and to recover what the looters had left; the chamber was filled with earth, no stratification was apparent and almost everything was smashed and scattered1. A bronze axe and a rolled-up bronze belt lay together in a covered pit beneath the floor, which Overbeck read as a secondary deposit, and he counted 13 stirrup jars among at least 26 Mycenaean vases originally present1. He placed the end of the tomb's use near the end of the thirteenth century BC1. The settlement, about 30 acres with a U-shaped enclosure and a square bastion, was surveyed and sherded, with Swiny directing and Jack Graham recording the houses to the south1. Its pottery is Red Polished IV, which the report places chiefly late in Middle Cypriot III, about 1700–1600 BC, following Åström's synopsis1. A sample collection of sherds was taken to Albany for permanent retention1. The report appeared in 1972 as Two Cypriot Bronze Age Sites at Kafkallia (Dhali)1.
