Hugo Helbing

1863–1938 · Germany

Munich auctioneer who sold the Cypriote collection of Julius Naue on 19 May 1908; Jena and Karlsruhe bought from that sale and Aachen and Hannover later bought from him.

Biography

Hugo Helbing's firm held the Munich auction of the Cypriote collection of Julius Naue on 19 May 1908, a year after Naue's death. Helbing, an art dealer and auctioneer, was born in Munich on 23 April 1863 and died there on 30 November 19382. Markus Recke names him in Munich, with Lederer in Berlin, among the dealers who resold and passed on material that Max Ohnefalsch-Richter had first supplied, the main source of the internal antiquities trade in Germany1.

Naue had about 120 Cypriote objects, much of it probably acquired through Ohnefalsch-Richter1. The catalogue is listed as Sammlung Prof. Dr. Julius Naue3. Recke records buyers from the sale: the university collection at Jena took 15 pieces of pottery, Karlsruhe took two pots, and the Munich Dehn collection later sent its Cypriote vases to Erlangen in 19421.

German museums also list purchases from Helbing himself: Aachen in 1910 and Hannover in 19131.
