History
- 9 November 1889Hannover's oldest municipal museum is established, named after the diplomat August Kestner; the founding collection includes Kestner's antiquities (Cypriot material is not mentioned for this foundation).
- 1900Cypriot objects enter with the Peter-Meyer collection (Slg. Peter-Meyer); the earlier Kestner holdings are listed by Recke as 'Slg. Kestner / alter Bestand'.
- 1914–1952The Cypriot collection of Paul von Tischendorf (over 100 objects) is on permanent loan to the Kestner-Museum. Recke thinks it probably arose as a diplomat's collection in the Orient and is unusual among German private collections in being tied to its collector's biography.
- 1927Purchase from the Berlin dealer Philipp Lederer. Recke notes the museum acquired Cypriot material again only from 1927 after the post-inflation break.
- 1929A silver tetradrachm of Ptolemy V (a Cypriot coin issue in Recke's list) bought from the Amsterdam dealer Schulmann.
- 1952The museum buys the Tischendorf collection (over 100 Cypriot objects) outright; Recke singles it out as the one postwar exception, since otherwise Cypriot antiquities came only as single pieces.
- 1990'Die Phönizier im Zeitalter Homers' (Hannover, 14 Sep to 25 Nov 1990) shows several Cypriot pieces from the Kestner-Museum, previously unknown to scholarship, with loans from Berlin, Brussels, London and Paris; it then travels to Hamburg and Munich (1991).
- 2013Catalogue 'Von Aphrodites Insel. Zyprische Altertümer im Museum August Kestner' (Museum Kestnerianum 18), edited by Bärbel Morstadt and Anne Viola Siebert, with an essay by Sabine Rogge 'Von der Gier nach wertvollen Objekten' and one by Recke on collecting Cypriot antiquities in Germany.
