Life and work
- June 1983Engaged by the Menil Foundation (late June 1983) to represent it in all matters regarding the Lysi murals, as a leading American authority on international law and the fine arts; he advised on the uncertain state of the law on buying from a dealer with no credible provenance and on the UNESCO convention, and wrote to the countries that might claim the frescoes.

- 6 September 1983Of the countries he consulted, three claimed the frescoes: Turkey, Lebanon and, on 6 September, Cyprus, whose letter identified the murals as removed from the church of St Themonianos (Euphemianos) near Lysi between 1974 and 1983. The Menil Foundation then agreed (Nov. 1983) to redeem them for the Church of Cyprus.
