Christopher D. Schabel

fl. 2005–2021

Medieval historian at the University of Cyprus who edited the papal letters concerning Cyprus and, with Angel Nicolaou-Konnari, two histories of the island and of Limassol cited by archaeologists.

Biography

Christopher Schabel is a historian of medieval Cyprus whose editions and collective volumes are among the works that archaeologists of the Byzantine and Frankish island cite. The 2015 contributor notes record a PhD from the University of Iowa in 1994, a professorship of medieval history at the University of Cyprus, a specialism in later medieval intellectual history and the Latin East, and the editorship of the journal Vivarium1.

With Angel Nicolaou-Konnari he edited Cyprus: Society and Culture 1191-1374 (Brill, 2005), in which his own chapter, "Religion", runs from page 157 to page 2182,3. He edited Bullarium Cyprium I, the papal letters concerning Cyprus (Nicosia, 2010)4. In 2015 the same two editors produced Lemesos: A History of Limassol in Cyprus from Antiquity to the Ottoman Conquest, with chapters by Tassos Papacostas and others and a joint chapter, "Limassol under Latin Rule"1.

Several archaeological books cite these volumes, among them Cyprus and the Balance of Empires and the Malloura Valley study of Athienou6,7.
