Anne-Marie Guimier-Sorbets

fl. 2002–2016 · France

Archaeologist of Hellenistic funerary architecture and mosaics who, with Demetrios Michaelides, argued that Alexandrian tomb design reached the tombs of Nea Paphos.

Biography

Anne-Marie Guimier-Sorbets and Demetrios Michaelides argued that the Alexandrian tomb model, with its courtyard, peristyle, loculi, painted decoration and imitation doors, reached Nea Paphos in the Tombs of the Kings and Ammoi Tomb 13. They presented the paper at the Egypt and Cyprus in Antiquity conference in Nicosia in April 2003, and it appeared in the 2009 proceedings. They note that the Ptolemies kept Cypriots out of high office and that the tombs may have housed Alexandrian officials3.

In September 2009 she and Michaelides organised a colloquium on Hellenistic and Imperial Cyprus at Université Paris Ouest-Nanterre and the Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art, and edited its papers as Cahiers du Centre d'Études Chypriotes 394. Her own paper in that volume treats three Hellenistic figured pavements: a pebble floor under the House of Dionysos at Nea Paphos, found in 1977; a pebble mosaic over a tomb at Kourion; and a pavement on Fabrika Hill, deposited in 19961. In 2016, in the volume for Antoine Hermary, she and Michaelides compared the Tombs of the Kings with tombs on Rhodes and at Lindos and proposed that the Agia Solomoni and Agios Lambrianos hypogea may have been underground nymphaea2.

Gave, with D. Michaelides, 'Alexandrian Influences on the Architecture and Decoration of the Hellenistic Tombs of Cyprus' at the Egypt and Cyprus in Antiquity conference (Nicosia, 3-6 April 2003); it argues the Alexandrian tomb model reached Nea Paphos (Tombs of the Kings, Ammoi Tomb 1) and brought the loculus with it.

Published with D. Michaelides 'Funerary architecture and other underground structures in Hellenistic Cyprus and Rhodes' (CCEC 46, Hommage à Antoine Hermary, pp. 305-322): compares the Tombs of the Kings at Nea Paphos with Rhodes and Lindos, argues both took an Alexandrian model, and suggests the Agia Solomoni and Agios Lambrianos hypogea may have been underground nymphaea, not catacombs.
