The Cyprus Institute is recruiting a full-time Associate Research Scientist in Digital Cultural Heritage and Heritage Data Integration (reference STARC_ARS_26_13) for STARC, its archaeology and culture research centre, at the Athalassa campus in Nicosia. Applications close on 15 November 2026.
The researcher will work with the APAC Labs team on making digital records of the past usable by others: 3D documentation and spatial analysis of archaeological material, semantic modelling, metadata and ontologies (formal vocabularies that let databases describe objects in the same terms), and repositories that can exchange data. The Institute names heritage digital twins, data-driven study of objects, monuments and collections, and provenance tracking as possible applications. The post also carries a share of scientific leadership in collaborative projects, writing papers and EU or national grant bids (with the chance of PI or co-PI roles later), and mentoring junior researchers and graduate students.
Candidates need a doctorate in archaeology or digital archaeology, in heritage science or the digital humanities, or in computer science, cultural heritage informatics or a neighbouring subject with a record of heritage work, proven research on heritage data integration and semantic knowledge representation, and experience of documenting research datasets for provenance, quality and reproducibility. The Institute would prefer knowledge of CIDOC CRM and FAIR data practice, work combining imaging, analytical or conservation data, and experience of European projects and partnerships with museums.
The first contract runs for 24 months and may be renewed, depending on performance and funding. The starting salary is €44,516.94, point CYI5.2 on the Institute's CYI5 salary band.
Applicants submit, in English and as PDFs, a CV with a short letter of interest or vision statement, a list of publications and three referees with contact details, through the Institute's recruitment portal. The Institute says recruitment continues until the process is marked closed. The contact is Prof Sorin Hermon (s.hermon@cyi.ac.cy), who in 2018 published with colleagues a 3D shape analysis of a Late Bronze Age stone object from Pyla-Kokkinokremos [1]. STARC is also advertising a second Associate Research Scientist post, on the digital modelling and management of historic buildings and sites (STARC_ARS_26_14), with the same closing date.
