The American Center of Research (ACOR) in Amman has opened its 2027–2028 fellowship round, with every award closing on 15 February 2027. The largest are three Amman Prizes for residential research on Jordan, each worth up to US$25,000, ACOR announced.
Two of the prizes go to doctoral students who have finished everything but the dissertation (ABD). They fund four months at ACOR and are restricted to US citizens enrolled at universities in the United States. The third, for postgraduates and professionals, funds two to four months and is open to any nationality, although ACOR may favour Jordanian, American, Canadian, Syrian and Australian applicants; its subject may be Jordan or Syria. Each prize breaks down into $5,000 for research and travel, a monthly stipend of $3,500 and $1,500 a month for room and board, and it must be spent in calendar 2027. Anyone who held an ACOR fellowship in the past five years cannot apply, and nor can undergraduates.
Alongside the prizes come up to 12 named fellowships, most of them for students joining excavations or doing research in Jordan. Among them, the Jennifer C. Groot Memorial Fellowship gives two awards of $3,000 to US or Canadian students new to fieldwork who have a place on a project in Jordan, and the Pierre and Patricia Bikai Fellowship pays an $800 monthly stipend with room and board at ACOR to non-Jordanian graduate students working on archaeology in Jordan. Four awards are reserved for Jordanian students, and a further $3,500 award helps a Jordanian researcher present a paper at a conference in the United States or Canada.
The Amman Prizes require research principally concerned with Jordan (Jordan or Syria for the postgraduate prize), and the named fellowships support work in Jordan or Jordanian students. Researchers whose subject is Cyprus have the calls of the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute in Nicosia, for US postdoctoral scholars and for graduate students, both of which close before ACOR's deadline.
Applications go through the online portal, and questions to fellowships@acorjordan.org.
