History
- 10 August 1802Commodore Sidney Smith's ship Tigre anchored at Katopaphos; his secretary Hammer-Purgstall visited Palaipaphos, and on a third day Smith gave him the ship's boat and crew to dig out a mosaic floor and take inscribed stones aboard. A sailor's carelessness smashed part of the mosaic, according to Hammer's memoirs. Smith gave away the larger inscription.
