- 1878Lieutenants R. L. Hippisley and H. H. Kitchener, Royal Engineers, landed at Larnaca on the night of 29-30 September to begin a trigonometrical survey of Cyprus; Hippisley then accompanied Alessandro Palma di Cesnola on his way from Ormidia.

- 1879Road construction near Aradippou supervised by Lieutenant H. M. Sinclair, Royal Engineers, revealed ancient tombs; he asked permission to excavate further burials. Sinclair also supervised the demolition at Bamboula (Kition) that year.

- 1879Newton, on his April 1879 visit, was told by Major Maitland, the officer commanding the Royal Engineers in Cyprus, of ancient fortifications; Newton thanked the Royal Engineers officers for their help in his report.
- 1881–1883Sinclair declined (1881) the post of assistant on Kitchener's Survey of Cyprus, became private secretary to the High Commissioner, and was entrusted with the Cyprus Museum as curator and honorary secretary after Kitchener left in 1883; he expanded it with the help of Max Ohnefalsch-Richter.
