History
- 1870Cesnola wrote to the Hermitage's Keeper of Antiquities offering his whole collection (then about 5,000 objects); the Director-General of the Hermitage, Gedeonov, of the Ministry, authorised the purchase of a small selection (3 painted vases, 2 male heads, 2 limestone and 2 terracotta statues) for 6,000 francs.

- 1870The Ministry, which managed the Hermitage, financed Assistant Keeper Johannes Doell's trip to Cyprus; the selected part (Golgoi sculpture) could not be bought because in August 1870 the transaction was forbidden by Alexander II, for reasons the source calls unclear (financial difficulties of the Ministry are surmised).
