The Cypriot collection
One documented Cypriot object: the bronze Apollo head from Tamassos (the 'Chatsworth Head'), held 1839-1956 (1956)
History
- March 1839The 6th Duke of Devonshire bought seven antiquities at Smyrna from Henry Perigal Borrell for 15 pounds, among them the bronze Apollo head found at Tamassos in 1836; it was the only Cypriot piece. The head had earlier passed through Antonio Vondiziano, British vice-consul at Larnaca, who per Ross sold it to Borrell for 1800 piastres.
