The project
On Sunday 21 November 1897 Gregorios Antoniou, called Gregori in Cadogan's account, opened a tomb in the region of Mari and Kalavasos and found Mycenaean pottery; its precise location is unknown1. Gerald Cadogan places the episode in the British Museum's 1897 campaign at Maroni, during which H.B. Walters and Percy Christian also investigated the region of Mari and Kalavasos, with trials between the two villages near the river1. Finds from the trials included pottery with painted patterns on coarse, thick ware and a scarab1. Cadogan notes that the number and locations of the trials cannot be established and suggests that one site encountered may have been Kalavasos-Ayios Dhimitrios1.
