The project
In 1978 a Cypro-Archaic tomb within the village of Mari was reported, with an illustrated Bichrome IV jug (CS 2466) and a Black Slip jug1. In 1980, at Kopetra about 1 km southwest of the village, a Hellenistic olive press found accidentally during construction of the Nicosia-Limassol road was excavated by the Department of Antiquities under S. Hadjisavvas2. It had a circular crushing basin with a central solid column and millstones, and a press base measuring 3.70 by 1.30 m with three incised circles joined by a channel and two outlets leading to reservoirs2. Carbonised olive stones, a Hellenistic clay lamp and stone weights were found with it2. Karageorghis's 1981 notice describes it as the first installation of its kind excavated on the island2.
