The project
At Laxia tou Riou, J. L. Myres excavated a necropolis in 1894 for the Cyprus Exploration Fund, and the catalogue of the Cyprus Museum that he wrote with M. Ohnefalsch-Richter lists five tomb groups from it, Tombs 1 to 51. Gagné gives 1897 for Myres's excavation, citing Frankel2.
The catalogue describes Tomb 1 as a dome-shaped cave with five shallow niches and marks its group as the Government share, noting that stone and clay spindlewhorls, a spearhead and other objects were in the Ashmolean Museum1. Tomb 4 was a dome-shaped cave with a small square door high in its side. Its contents include a Mykenaean vase (catalogue item 431), two similar vessels, a bügelkanne, base-ring jugs and a bowl, hemispherical bowls, kraters and spindlewhorls1. The catalogue marks the Tomb 4 group as divided, with the rest in the Ashmolean Museum1. For Tombs 2, 3 and 5 it lists pottery and other objects without describing the architecture1.
Pezzi reports five LH IIIA2 vases from Tomb 4, among them piriform jars, an alabastron and a stirrup jar3. Gagné discusses two Middle Cypriot White Painted vessels attributed to the site, a jug with tubular spout (A757) and a tankard (C.76), and proposes that they may have come from a Mesaoria production centre, while noting that their motifs resemble those popular at Lapithos2.
