Dromolaxia-Vyzakia (Hala Sultan Tekke): the 2014 geophysical and soil-chemistry survey
2014 · Hala Sultan Tekke
A survey of 27 October to 7 November 2014 at Dromolaxia-Vyzakia combining geophysics with micro-XRF analysis of 235 soil samples, in which the authors saw the mark of metalworking.

The project
A geophysical and soil-chemistry survey took place at Dromolaxia-Vyzakia (Hala Sultan Tekke) from 27 October to 7 November 2014. The University of Cyprus sponsored it, with the Cyprus Institute, the IMS-FORTH GeoSat ReSeArch Lab and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel as partners1,2. A study of the soil chemistry reports 235 samples from four zones, taken with an auger at the surface or at depth, and measured by micro-XRF for K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu and Zn2. Samples came from excavated Area 8 and from unexcavated areas, including magnetic anomalies and places with surface slag fragments2. Hafez and colleagues consider the elemental patterns attributable to metalworking or related processes, and report that the results corroborated the geophysical data and highlighted zones for future archaeological work2.
