The Department of Antiquities' 1970 emergency excavation of seven Cypro-Archaic II to Cypro-Classical I tombs in the Classical cemetery at Athienou, with a horse-and-rider terracotta and a silver ring set with an Attic hemi-obol.
The project
In 1970 the Department of Antiquities carried out an emergency excavation of seven tombs in the Classical cemetery in the village of Athienou, at Golgoi1. Karageorghis notes that the cemetery was already known from earlier discoveries1. The tombs are assigned to Cypro-Archaic II to Cypro-Classical I and held ordinary pottery1. The report records a terracotta figurine of a horse and rider from tomb CS. 1794, and a silver ring whose bezel is an Attic silver hemi-obol with a helmeted head of Athena on the obverse from another tomb1. The report lists the tombs as CS. 1794, 1795 and 1798 to 18011.
