Golgoi: rescue excavation of tombs at the west edge of Athienou, 1964
1964 · Golgoi
A 1964 rescue excavation at the west edge of Athienou that exposed two tombs of a newly found Late Archaic and early Classical cemetery.
The project
In 1964 trench digging at the west edge of Athienou, on the site of ancient Golgoi, exposed two tombs in a newly found cemetery that V. Karageorghis dates to the end of the Archaic and the start of the Classical period1. The work was done on behalf of the Department of Antiquities1. The first tomb held jugs, bowls, saucer-shaped lamps and a White-Painted V dinos (CS 1401) whose linear decoration Karageorghis calls rather awkwardly executed1. A second tomb, a short distance away, held two nearly identical ordinary-ware jugs (one is CS 1400). Karageorghis writes that they appear to imitate metal vessels and compares them with fifth-century Attic oinochoai1. The notice appeared in the Bulletin de correspondance hellénique, in his report on the discoveries of 19641.
