Dromolaxia-Trypes: Department rescue of two tombs (1977)

The Department of Antiquities excavated two chamber tombs at Trypes in 1977, after levelling had damaged them; flooding in antiquity had disturbed their contents, and the report states that stratigraphic observations could not be made¹. The report lists a Bichrome Wheelmade jug with an armed figure, a nude female figurine in Base Ring II ware, a gold bull's-head earring and two cylinder seals, without saying which tomb held each¹. Stella M. Lubsen-Admiraal, who was present, later identified the graves as Tombs 1 and 2². In Tomb 1, a roughly circular chamber about 3 m across, the figurine lay on its back, feet to the east, on a pebble and bone floor close to three skulls; Tomb 2 held 40 artefacts and no terracotta female figurine, and she dates its use from Middle Cypriot III to early Late Cypriot I². All 116 items from Tomb 1 are now in the Larnaca District Museum².
